Flash Code 57 (12V2000 Detroit Engine)

1). Description of Flash Code 57

Flash Code 57 indicates that the J1922 (Low Speed Powertrain) Data Link is no longer allowing the ECM, see Figure 1.2, to transmit data.

This diagnostic condition is typically:

→Either or both of the Data Link circuits are shorted to ground at some point in the network.

→Either or both of the Data Link circuits are shorted to battery (+) at some point in the network.

→The pair of Data Link circuits are shorted together.

2). SAE J1587 Equivalent Code for Flash Code 57

→The SAE J1587 equivalent code for Flash Code 57 is S-249 12.

3). Troubleshooting Flash Code 57

(A). Test Step 1 - Code Check

Perform the following steps to determine the fault.

a). Turn ignition ON.

b). Plug in the DDDL, read Active Codes. Read More: How to Connecting the DETROIT Engines using Detroit Diesel Diagnostic Link (DDDL).

→If code 249/12 is logged, refer to Test Step 2

→If code 254/12 is logged, and no other codes are logged, replace the ECM.

(B). Test Step 2 - Verify Codes

Perform the following steps to verify codes.

a). Clear codes with DDDL.

b). Start and run the Engine for one minute.

c). Check CEL (Check Engine Light) for codes.

→If CEL is ON with code 249/12 displayed, refer to Test Step 3

→If CEL is not ON and no codes are displayed, refer to Test Step 5

(C). Test Step 3 - Check for OEM Devices

Perform the following steps to check for OEM devices.

a). Turn vehicle ignition OFF.

b). Determine if any OEM equipment utilizes the J1922 Data Link. See Figure 1.4 

→If no OEM devices are installed, refer to Test Step 4.

→If OEM devices are installed, refer to Test Step 4.

(D). Test Step 4 - Disconnect Nodes

Perform the following steps to disconnect nodes.

a). Start and run Engine with OEM installed devices disconnected.

→If the disconnect does not solve the problem, continue the procedure.

→If the disconnect solved the problem, fault is in node/wiring.

B). Observe CEL codes.

→If no CEL or codes are displayed, fault is in node/wiring.

→If CEL is ON with code 249/12 logged, install a test ECM.

(E). Test Step 5 - Verify Repair

Perform the following steps to verify repairs.

a). Turn vehicle ignition OFF.

b). Reconnect all connectors.

c). Turn ignition ON.

d). Clear codes with DDDL.

e). Start and run the Engine for one minute.

f). Stop Engine.

g). Check DDDL for codes.

→If no codes are displayed, troubleshooting is complete.

→If CEL is ON with code 249/12 logged, all system diagnostics are complete. To troubleshoot the error, refer to Test Step 1.
