SPN630 FMI2
Calibration Memory: Erratic, Intermittent, or Incorrect (CDL Code: 268-2)

#Troubleshooting: Configurations Parameter
Codes that relate to the Configurations Parameter:
  • CDL Code: 268-2
  • J1939 Code: 630-2

Code Descriptions: Programmed Parameter Fault: Erratic, Intermittent, or Incorrect.
Comments: The Engine Electronic Control Module (ECM) detects that one or more of the programmable parameters have not been programmed. The ECM may use a default torque map or the ECM may limit the Engine to low idle. The code is active only.

Use this procedure if the Diagnostic Code as above (refer to Figure 1.1) is active.
The Caterpillar Electronic Technician (ET) can be used to view certain parameters that can affect the operation of the Engine. CAT ET can also be used to change certain parameters. Some parameters cannot be changed and some applications do not allow any changes to the programmable monitoring system. The parameters are stored in the Electronic Control Module (ECM). Some of the parameters are protected from unauthorized changes by passwords. Parameters that can be changed have a tattletale number. The tattletale number shows if a parameter has been changed.

The parameters are divided into two different types:
  • Customer Specified Parameters - Customer passwords may be required to change the values of customer specified parameters.
  • System Configuration Parameters - System configuration parameters affect the emissions of the Engine or the power of the Engine. Factory Passwords may be required to change the values of system configuration parameters.

1). Check Programmable Configurations
If a programmable parameter has not been programmed, the ECM will generate a 268-2 or 630-2 Diagnostic Code. The programmable parameter that is not programmed will be listed under the code. Figure 1.3 below, shows the parameters that are not programmed under the 268-2 code. The unprogrammed parameters will be set to default. Certain aspects of the Engines performance and Engine monitoring may be affected.
Figure 1.2 - CDL Code (268-2)
A. Connect to CAT ET. Read More: How to Connecting Caterpillar ET Software to the ECM.
B. Select the Service tab.
C. Select the Configuration tab to view the Configuration Parameters.
Figure 1.3 - System Settings (Configuration)
If an ECM is replaced, the appropriate parameters must be copied from the old ECM. Copy the parameters with the Copy Configuration feature of the CAT ET. The Copy Configuration tab is below the Configuration tab. Alternatively, the settings can be recorded on paper and then programmed into the configuration screen that is for the new module. Read More: Copy Configuration Function on Caterpillar ET Software.

2). Check the Active Diagnostic Codes
The programmable parameter that is not programmed will be listed under the code. Figure 1.4 below, shows the parameters that are not programmed under the 268-2 code. The unprogrammed parameters will be set to default. Certain aspects of the Engines performance and Engine monitoring may be affected.
A. Select the Diagnostics tab.
B. Select the Active Diagnostic Codes tab.

3). Change the System Settings (Configuration)
A. Select the FLS or FTS tab.
→FLS - Full Load Setting
→FTS - Full Torque Setting
B. Warning message displays, click OK to continue.
Figure 1.5 - FTS and FLS (Warning)
C. Change the parameters values for FLS and FTS, then click OK.

→The information for FLS and FTS are available on Engine's Name Plate or through TMI web. Read More: Name Plate on Caterpillar Engine.

D. Message box: Are you sure you want to program this parameter? displays.

E. Click Yes to continue.

#Additional Note:
→If the Diagnostic Code SPN 630-FMI 2 remain active after reset/switched off the Battery system, please try to do flashing/flash programming the ECM flash file through the WinFlash menu.
→If the error still active, the suspect problem is the internal ECM (i.e Personality Module, EEPROM/ECM Memory corrupted). Then you need to replace the ECM assembly, with CAT P/N 255-5285. Read More: Programming the New ECM using Caterpillar ET Software
Figure 2.1 - New ECM (255-5285)
→The Copy Configuration or ECM replacement file from any existent ECM that is experiencing problems should not be used. In doing so, the problem will be transferred to a new ECM.
→The parameters must be programmed manually line by line when replacing the existing ECM with a new ECM.
→Do NOT use the Copy Configuration or ECM replacement file if corruption/memory loss is suspected with but not limited to the following symptoms:
  • Parameters such as Engine serial number, Full Load Setting (FLS)/ Full Torque Setting (FTS), Injector trim files show up as being Not Programmed in the ECM configuration.
  • All the Injector current fault codes are logged at the same time.
  • Evidence of tampering such as altered FLS/ FTS, Injector trim files, unauthorized rating, hacked service tools (last tool to Change systems parameters or Customer parameters).
  • The Check Engine light remains illuminated due to truck Engine-related faults.
If an ECM is functioning properly, the Copy Configuration can be used on the next ECM.
